How To Qualify For An Executive Chef Position, And What The Executive Chef Job Description Entails
An executive chef position is much coveted, and not easy to obtain. If you have the basic ability needed for the job, it will still take diligent study and years of working your way up through the ranks before you can enjoy the rewards which success bring. Having said that, there are many positive reasons for choosing food preparation as a career, and very few of those who have reached the level of executive chef would ever want to leave the industry, even if meant a dramatic increase in salary.
If you are thinking of trying for a career as a chef, there are several considerations which you will need to bear in mind. Firstly, it is a physically gruelling profession, with a lot of lifting of heavy objects, and other taxing work such as kneading dough, often performed over very long work shifts. You will certainly need a good standard of basic physical fitness to have a successful career as a chef, even though much of the work will be something which you can grow into over time.
On the positive side, working in food preparation is one of the most solid and least risky careers. There is never going to be a time when restaurants and food establishments will disappear. People will always need to eat, and they will always want to do so in pleasant surroundings. There is no shortage of opportunity to find jobs, and little if any prospect of technology taking them away. There is also a high turnover in the industry, meaning that opportunities open up regularly. Food preparation is also a career which rewards the effort people are prepared to put in, making it forever attractive to people who lack formal qualifications.
It is, of course, not possible to just walk into an executive chef position without putting in a lot of preparation. You will need to start at the bottom and work your way up. If you are starting from scratch, the best option is to start by reading as much as you possibly can, and experimenting in your own kitchen at home. This will teach you a lot of the basics, and show you whether this type of work is really right for you. If you are satisfied that it is, you can then take the next step of enroling in a cookery course.
Cooking schools are a necessary step towards an executive chef position, and you should choose your school very carefully. Make sure that you will get an accreditation which will be recognized within the industry, as you are not doing this for fun. The executive chef job description will demand the right formal qualification. The good news is that modern cooking schools are flexible enough to work around the needs of people with full time jobs, meaning that there is no real barrier for those who are determined enough. Put in the work, and you will have a great chance of eventually landing an executive chef position.
