How To Rise Through The Ranks To Become An Executive Sous Chef

And executive sous chef is the highest ranking chef in the kitchen. Often called just the executive chef, the executive sous chef will have a sous chef under him, and then the regular chefs will be beneath the sous chef. The executive sous chef is the person with the highest degree of responsibility in any eating establishment, and it is the choices he makes which will largely determine the quality and variety of food on offer, and the success or otherwise of the restaurant. The great chefs reach this level, and then impose their own unique style on the operation, in full belief that the changes they make will enhance the whole organization.

It goes without saying that a job of executive sous chef is very hard to attain. You will certainly never get one through luck, or just by being in the right place at the right time. It will take a directed, dedicated effort, and not a small amount of hard work, to make it to the very top. What is highly significant, though, is that culinary careers are attained through merit, and the way to achievement is open to virtually anyone. If your dream is to be the head chef of a restaurant, then it is achievable provided you have the basic fitness to cope with some of the gruelling aspects of the job.

If you are shooting for the top, you will have a lot better chance if you plan for the top right from the start. Great chefs, like the great in most other professions, will have such an enthusiasm that they think about their job constantly. They will spend many hours in their kitchens at home experimenting with new ideas and new variations. It is strongly advised that you do the same, even if you have not even got your first job in catering yet. Do some research in to what your local cooking schools can offer, and try to find ones which will fit in with your current lifestyle.

The cooking school you choose is one of the most important assets you will have in your career. Through this, you will get the qualification you will need to apply for jobs as chefs. You may even be able to get more than this. There are cooking schools which will even find you a basic job in a food establishment while you are learning. If you can get a course like this, you will gain valuable experience as well as the piece of paper which can open doors. This training model fits in perfectly with the lifestyle of most modern working people, and should be copied throughout other industries.

Of course, all of this is a long way away from the career of executive sous chef, but you have to start somewhere. If you can just get your foot in the door with a basic job in catering, then you really do have a chance. Concentrate on improving your skills in your own kitchen, as well as in the cooking schools. Even after you have got a basic job, keep taking any classes which will help you improve still further. Keep a solid work record, and one day you may be appointed executive sous chef.
